Multi-Disciplinary Artist
I’m Unyime Etuk, a self-taught Nigerian figurative artist.
I have been drawing since I was a child, but t was after graduating from university in 2015 that I began to take art seriously and see where it could take me. I started with pencil and pastel before moving into painting, and for years I worked mainly through commissions, drawing and painting people for clients. With time, I became more interested in making work that came from my own questions rather than someone else’s request.
My work is now centred on the human figure, with oil painting as my primary medium. I draw from the Black experience, the things we carry, the way we are seen, and the questions that come with being Black.
My current body of work, People of Colour, began with a question that I found impossible to ignore: What if we were literally people of colour? It has since become my life's work, and I am still finding out where that question will take me.
